This game proved to be a severe test of the resilience of Ben Rhydding 5th XI. The visitors were a powerful and fast side, who raced to a 2-0 lead after only 10 minutes. Leeds had won 8-0 the previous week, so the outlook seemed bleak for Rhydding.
However the home side gradually managed to get into the game. Musgrave, Ketteman and Jordan put in great efforts to stem the tide, and gradually they were able to create some possession for Dawson on the right. After 25 minutes Dawson played a pass across the circle for youngster Jamie Metcalfe to the score until a neat reverse stick deflection.
The game moved to the second half with both sides mounting attack and counter-attack. Mid way through the second half Rhydding scored from a short corner: the Leeds goalkeeper failed to clear, and Woodhead fired the ball into the roof of the net.
Leeds replied almost immediately, with a short corner stuck fiercely into the corner of the goal.
Leeds could not add to their 3-2 lead; but in the final minute Rhydding were awarded another short corner. Hornby’s stop, and smart pass to Woodhead unsettled the Leeds defence who could not stop Woodhead’s shot for a dramatic equaliser.
