A hard fought, but good natured game brought the Ben Rhydding 5th team their first league victory of the season. Rhydding worked hard from the off, making good use of the ball around the back to distribute well up throught the midfield. Unfortunately many good attacks fell foul of the solid defence provided by some key York players in their backline.
The Ben Rhydding defence held strong throughout the first half, with excellent play from young Alec Smith at left back.
The first Rhydding goal came from a neat tiptoing ballet manouveure from Roughton as he narrowly avoiding standing on the ball, to turn and shoot straight as an arrow onto the backboard.
Play resumed with City of York looking for an equaliser, which they found during a quick break that left the otherwise solid defence left open. Rhydding took the warning to heart and started to rebuild from the back, with excellent speed and skill both up the right and left sides. The constistent forays into the York 'D' paid off eventually with an excellent strike from Jerram. Now 2-1 up with a good while to go, Rhydding should have played a steady, careful game, but still jittery from the poor beginning to the season, the 5th team made hard work of the remaining time. York continually pressed home only to be rebuffed by the consistent good work of the Rhydding back line. More chances were created in the York 'D' by good work from the upfield contingent, but none quite resolved into the goal that would have settled things for good.
Overall, an good performance from Rhydding 5ths, that will hopefully give them the confidence to settle down to a better state for next week's game against Rotherham.
