Ben Rhydding 5ths - 0
Ben Rhydding 5th team travelled to Rotherham for an early 11 o’clock start. Having won the previous game they were optimistic that the last victory would “kick start” the season. Unfortunately it wasn’t to happen as Ben Rhydding were beaten 3 – 0 by a well disciplined Rotherham team.
It came as no surprise when Rotherham took an early lead as they had dominated the early part of the game. After the first goal, Ben Rhydding moved up a gear and started to move the ball around the pitch far more effectively, which resulted in a number of goal scoring opportunities. However, try as they might, the away team were unable to score the equaliser.
Two first half incidents practically put the game beyond Ben Rhydding. Philip Blackburn went off injured and Rotherham scored their second goal just before the interval.
The second half continued in much the same vein as the first with chances going to both sides. John Roughton and Joe Drakard were solid in defence and Mark Ketteman worked tirelessly in the midfield. Unfortunately, Rotherham scored their third goal midway through the second half to seal the match.
Although the result was disappointing, Ben Rhydding can take credit for a gritty performance that will inevitably produce positive results as the season progresses.
