Ben Rhydding 5ths 1 vs Huddersfield 5ths 0
Ben Rhydding Men's 5th team secured a deserving victory in the weekend's low table clash, despite the jokes in their direction from the evil minions of the fourth team. Rhydding, having suffered too many defeats in the season thus far, came in to the game desperate for a win to restore the confidence in the team.
From the off, the home team put together move after move that pushed high into the opposition's half, but never quite managed to build on the solid defence and creative midfield and convert the chances into goals.
Huddersfields occasion foray into the Rhydding D were effectively repulsed by the solid defensive line of Roughton, Lowe, Woodhead and Smith. Up front, the fresh skills of Mark Portnell gave Woodhead a good target for free hits.
The breakthrough came when the Huddersfield keeper tried to climb up Woodhead's back after an attacking short corner broke down. Rhydding were awarded a penalty flick, which Jordan promptly converted.
Rhydding then held on for the remainder of the match, despite squandering possession all too often. Good performances were given by youngsters Drakard and Portnell, ably supported by the usual suspects.
The fifth team travel to Sheffield University Bankers 7th team this weekend, weather permitting, and are looking to up their game to secure a more comfortable position in the league before Christmas.
