Ben Rhydding IV Team Promoted...

Ben Rhydding IV team capped a superb season with a 1-0 win over a beefed up York team that was fighting to avoid relegation. Rhydding needed a win to secure their promotion slot; having won their previous 3 games with 14 goals and none conceded.

Rhydding had to absorb much of the play in the early part of the first half. York pressed the game and created opportunities. Will Benedikz in goal was called on to make a number of critical saves early on both on the line and pushing out to the top of the circle.

Rhydding started to settle and hold much of the midfield with quality possession and skill from Peter Langley and a steady performance from Andrew Logan sweeping in front of the back three of Lambert, Appleby and Houghton. The back three along with other key players not available on the day, Ward and Sumnall have been key to the teams successful season, conceding fewer goals than any other team in the Division.

Joint captains Steven Butts and Ian Shutt along with Tom Elliott, the engine room of the midfield had a busy day keeping on top of the York attacking play and recycling the ball up to the forwards.

At half time with the score at 0-0 the team knew they had weathered the early storm and could now press on to seize the advantage. Following the interval the team came out hard in the second half. Rhydding forced a number of short corners but they were well defended and unusually Smith and Appleby failed to convert them.

In a tight game, the breakthrough eventually came from an error from the York keeper who stepped over the ball as it was hit into the area by Snook, leaving it for Patrick Smith lurking just behind him to take the opportunity to pick up the ball and slot in a goal from his favoured reverse stick.

It was a fitting effort from Smith who finishes the season the clubs top scored with 25 goals a superb effort and another key factor in the 4th teams achievement.

The goal seemed to take the wind out of York's sails and Rhydding held the game despite the set back of losing Houghton with a broken finger. Shutt moved to left back with the talented Josh Holmes moving to left half and James Snook, who had one of his best games of the season completing the reshaped team.

Overall a solid performance, with good work rate and importantly, composure to take the game and promotion. The achievement also places the Rhydding IV team at the top of the Clubs internal competition the 'Power Trophy'.

Congratulations to everyone who played this season, including Tom Mountain, Sam Morris, Howard Pickard, Dan Pitcher, Martin Higgitt and Paul Wilson who, as part of the squad helped the second Rhydding team to achieve promotion with 14 wins, 5 draws and only 3 games lost over the season.
