Rhydding were slow to get going after the long drive to Formby and the home side picked up the reins from the first whistle. Converting some aggressive turnover play, Formby went 1-0 ahead early in the game. Rhydding replied with a silky corner from Matty Birch and now began to take control of the contest with long periods of quality possession. However, Formby were full of fire and threw everything forwards to take the lead with an easy overload. Matty Birch smashed another corner to level the scores and it looked like Rhydding’s game. They came out hard after the break and were relentless in their connections going forwards. George Gamble riding through some heavy tackles, flipped the ball to Callum Franks who finished with a flick past the keeper into the net to give Rhydding a well deserved lead. Rhydding defended intelligently through a rough patch but then stepped up a gear to kill the game off. Beautiful forehand connections all across the pitch led to a selfless pass from Will McHugh putting George Gamble on goal. His shot was stopped by a Formby player’s body and the resulting penalty stroke was fizzed home by Will Musgrave to put the game to bed at 4-2.
