12th Mar 2022 Mens 6th v Huddersfield Dragons(Away) 6 - 0 win

Ben Rhydding 6s took on Dragons at their temporary Wakefield home with a bare 11 players.

The squad was a mix of youth and experience with its middle aged back 4 giving way to a much younger midfield and forward line up.

After a shaky start where goalie Dan Byrne was called on for a couple of saves, the youngsters began to find their feet and there were several good passages of play. Some strong link up play on the right between Sam Dixon and Ollie Burgess led to Rhydding’s first goal. Burgess then picked up the ball on the P-spot following a cross from Dixon and smashed it home through a gap in the advancing Huddersfield Goalie’s pads. 1-0 to Rhydding at the 20 minutes mark.

Rhydding’s second goal came from a Flick, awarded after the Huddersfield right back decided to clear a shot from a well worked short corner routine off his goal line with his feet. Rory Wilkinson stepped up to calmly slot the ball top left corner.

In the second half Rhydding continued to press well with the youngsters showing good passing, pace, and intensity to their game. Caleb Dix and Ed Barker linked up well down the left with Barker then placing home Rhydding’s 3rd goal and then only a few minutes later, Archie Morton latched onto a loose ball in the Huddersfield D to smash in goal 4. Phil Burgin got in on the act from a short corner, passing the goalie low and left with a powerful drag flick.

A great team performance was rounded off with a second goal for Rory Wilkinson who after a penetrating run into the opposition’s D got a powerful shot away and the Huddersfield goalie removed the ball from the net for the 6th time.

A great team performance with several of the Huddersfield players approaching us after the game to comment on how well our youngsters had played. Well done to all!
